1990 Vatican documented theca with relic of St. Gertrude the Great

New Arrival
1990 Vatican documented theca with relic of St. Gertrude the Great

Round yellow-metal glass-fronted reliquary theca housing first-class ex ossibus (of the bone) relic of Saint Gertrude the Great. The relic is affixed to a red silk ground and identified in Latin on a typeset cedula label as S. Gertrudis V. (Saint Gertrude, Virgin). On the back, under a protective cap, the theca is secured with a seal of red Spanish wax bearing an imprint of a coat of arms of Monsignor Petrus Canisius van Lierde († 1995), the Vicar General for the Vatican City State (1951–1991). The reliquary is accompanied by the original matching authentics document issued by the Vicar General of Rome in 1990.

Saint Gertrude the Great († ca. 1302) was a German Benedictine nun, mystic, and theologian. One of the most esteemed woman saints of the Christian West, she was a notable early devotee of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Gertrude showed "tender sympathy towards the souls in purgatory" and urged prayers for them. She is, therefore, invoked for suffering souls in purgatory. Gertrude was never formally canonized, but a liturgical office of prayer, readings, and hymns in her honor was approved by Rome in 1606. The Feast of St. Gertrude was extended to the universal Church by Clement XII and is celebrated on November 16, the date of her death.
