The icon depicts Saint John the Forerunner in iconography of "the Angel of the desert". Saint John the Forerunner depicted standing in a deserted landscape next to a symbolic tree stump on the left corner that suspends an axe (Matthew 3:10: "The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire."). He looks like an Angel with wavy hair and wings holding in his right hand a chalice with his own lifeless head. In his left hand is a scroll with beginning of verse from Matthew 3:2 "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." St. John is depicted an "earthly Angel" and a "heavenly man" according to the hymnography of the Church for his feast. His wings symbolize his Angelic pure way of life.
