Reliquary theca with relics of St. Aloysius Gonzaga & Blessed James Philip Bertoni

Oval glass-fronted brass pendant reliquary theca housing relics of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga and the Blessed James Philip Bertoni. The relics are affixed to a red silk ground, surrounded by gilt paperolle ornamentation, and identified in Latin on a manuscript cedulae labels as S. Aloy: Gon // B. Jacobi Ph B (Saint Aloysius Gonzaga // Blessed James Philip Bertoni). On the back, the theca is secured with a perfectly preserved seal of red Spanish wax bearing an imprint of a coat of arms of Fr. Antonio Cantoni (†1781), Bishop of Faenza, Italy (1742–1767) and Archbishop of Ravenna, Italy (1767–1781).

Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, S.J. (Italian: Luigi Gonzaga; † 1591) was an Italian aristocrat who became a member of the Society of Jesus. While still a student at the Roman College, he died as a result of caring for the victims of an epidemic. He was beatified in 1605, and canonized in 1726. He is a patron of students, Christian youth, Jesuit scholastics, the blind, AIDS patients, AIDS caregivers.

Blessed James Philip Bertoni O.S.M. (†1483) - a Servite religious, who following his ordination to the priesthood, manifested a great devotion and reverence in celebrating Mass, contemplating the "mystery of the cross". ​He served as procurator of the Servite priory of Faenza. On one occasion, he healed an ill monk by making the sign of the cross over him three times. On his deathbed, Father James continued his daily recitation of the Divine Office while holding a crucifix, which he frequently kissed. It was while praying thus that he died.
