Reliquary theca with a relic of St. Calimerius, Martyr of Milan

Oval glass-fronted silver pendant reliquary theca housing the first-class ex ossibus (of the bone) relic of Saint Calimerius of Milan, Martyr. The relic is affixed to a gilt paper starburst on a salmon-colored silk ground, surrounded by silver wire ornamentation, and identified in Latin on a fancy manuscript cedula label as Ex Oss. S. Calimerii Ep. Mediol[anensis] M. (of the bone of Calimerius, Bishop of Milan & Martyr). On the back, the theca is secured with a seal of red Spanish wax bearing an imprint of a coat of arms of Fr. Francesco Maria Ginori (†1775), Bishop of Fiesole, Italy (1736–1775).

Saint Calimerius († 280 AD) was an early bishop of Milan who is honored as a Saint in the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches. He was born to a noble Roman family, entered military service and reached the rank of officer when he was converted to Christianity by saints Faustinus and Jovita. He was ordained priest by Castricianus and served at the Basilica Fausta. At the death of Castricianus, he was elected bishop. When he became bishop of Milan, he preached in the region and was killed during the persecutions of Christians by Commodus, by being flung headfirst into a well. His feast day is commemorated on July 31.
