1831 Documented reliquary theca with relic of St. Francis of Paola, O.M. & St. Apollonia Martyr

Oval glass-fronted brass pendant reliquary theca housing the second-class ex habitu (of a habit) relic of Saint Francis of Paola and the first-class ex ossibus (of a bone) relic of Saint Apollonia. Relics are affixed to the center of the theca surrounded by gilt paperolle and silver wire ornamentation and identified in Latin on a manuscript cedulae labels as S. Francisi de Paula // ex ossibus S. Apolloniae V.M. (Saint Francis of Paola // of the bone of Saint Apollonia, Virgin & Martyr).  On the back, under a glass-fronted protective cap, the theca is secured with a seal of red Spanish wax bearing an imprint of a coat of arms of Father Vitale Loschi (†1842), Bishop of Parma (1831-1842). The relic is accompanied by the original matching authentics document issued and sealed by the order of Bishop Loschi in 1831.

Saint Francis of Paola, O.M. (Francesco di Paola)(†1507) was an Italian mendicant friar and the founder of the Roman Catholic Order of Minims. The two major movements in this order were humility and non-violence. The word "Minim" refers to living as the smallest or least, or embracing humility, simplicity, and plainness. The call to non-violence and absence of cruelty was expressed through veganism and not doing harm to any creature. He is a patron saint of vegetarians, boatmen, mariners, and naval officers.

Saint Apollonia (†249) was one of a group of virgin martyrs who suffered in Alexandria during a local uprising against the Christians prior to the persecution of Decius. According to church tradition, her torture included having all of her teeth violently pulled out or shattered. For this reason, she is popularly regarded as the patroness of dentistry and those suffering from toothache or other dental problems. She is venerated in Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodox Church, and Oriental Orthodoxy, and her feast day is celebrated on February 9.
