Small reliquary theca with relic of St. James the Greater, Apostle

Small oval glass-fronted silver reliquary theca housing a relic of Saint James the Greater, Apostle. The relic is affixed to a silk ground surrounded by silver wire ornamentation and identified in Latin on a manuscript cedula label as S. Jacobi Maj.  (James the Greater). On the back, under a protective cap, the theca is secured with a perfectly-preserved seal of red Spanish wax bearing an imprint of a coat of arms of Monsignor Costantino Patrizi Naro (†1876), Dean of the College of Cardinals and the Vicar General of the Roman Curia (1841-1876).

Saint James, the Apostle († 44 AD) was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus, traditionally considered the first apostle to be martyred. He is also called James the Greater or James the Great to distinguish him from James, son of Alphaeus and James the Just. James the Greater is the patron saint of Spain, and as such is often identified as Santiago.
