Reliquary theca with relics of 2 Martyrs: St. Thomas of Canterbury (Becket) & St. Celestine

Round glass-fronted gilt brass reliquary theca housing the first-class ex ossibus (of the bone) relics of two Martyr Saints: Saint Celestine, Martyr and Saint Thomas of Canterbury, Martyr. The relics are affixed to a red silk background and identified on manuscript cedulae labels as S. Celestini M /S. Thomae E. Cant. M. (Saint Celestine, Martyr / St. Thomas, Bishop of Canterbury, Martyr). On the back, the theca is secured with a perfectly-preserved seal of red Spanish wax bearing an imprint of a coat of arms of an unidentified Italian Roman Catholic Bishop.

St. Celestine suffered martyrdom by being pierced through his heel with an iron rod. His feast day is celebrated on May 25th.

Saint Thomas of Canterbury, also known as Thomas Becket (†1170) served as Lord Chancellor from 1155 to 1162, and then as Archbishop of Canterbury from 1162 until his death in 1170. He engaged in conflict with Henry II, King of England, over the rights and privileges of the Church and was murdered by followers of the king in Canterbury Cathedral. Soon after his death, he was canonized by Pope Alexander III. The Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion venerate him as a saint and martyr. He is considered a patron Saint of the secular clergy, Exeter College in Oxford, Portsmouth Arbroath Abbey, and the City of London. His feast day is commemorated on 29 December.
