1816 Documented reliquary with relics of St. Benedict of Nursia, Father of Western Monasticism

Oval glass-fronted silver reliquary theca housing the first-class ex ossibus (of the bone) relic of Saint Benedict of NursiaThe relic is affixed to a red silk ground surrounded by gilt paperolle ornamentation and identified in Latin on a  manuscript cedula label as S. Benedicti Ab. (Saint Benedict, Abbott). On the back, the theca is secured with a perfectly preserved seal of red Spanish wax bearing an imprint of a coat of arms of Father Andrea Mastai-Ferretti (†1822), the Bishop of Pesaro (1806–1822). The theca is accompanied by the original matching authentics documents issued and signed by Fr. Mastai-Ferretti in 1816. 

Saint Benedict of Nursia (†547 AD) is a Christian saint venerated in the Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Churches. He is a patron saint of Europe and is considered to be the founder of Western Christian monasticism. He founded twelve communities for monks and his main achievement is his "Rule of Saint Benedict", containing precepts for his monks, combining unique spirit of balance, moderation and reasonableness.
