Blessed Francisco Palau y Quer, (†1872) known by his religious name of Francisco of Jesus, Mary and Joseph was a Catalan Discalced Carmelite friar and priest. Growing up in the chaos of the Peninsular War in Spain, he followed both the life of a hermit and of a missionary preacher in the rural regions of Catalonia. He founded the School of Virtue – which was a model of catechetical teaching for adults – in Barcelona. In 1860 he founded a mixed Congregation of Third Order of Discalced Carmelites, including both Brothers and Sisters, in the Balearic Islands. The legacy of this foundation is carried on by two religious congregations of women who serve throughout the world. Working from his tradition of Carmelite spirituality, Palau tried to promote the need to base the spiritual life on recognizing and returning God's love, as opposed to the rationalist doctrines of the theology of his day. He was beatified on April 24, 1988 by Pope John Paul II.
1988 Documented reliquary theca with relics of the Catalan Blessed Francisco Palau y Quer (Francisco of Jesus, Mary and Joseph)
Round glass-fronted yellow-metal reliquary theca housing the first-class ex ossibus (of the bone) relic of the Blessed Francisco Palau y Quer (Francisco of Jesus, Mary and Joseph). The relic is affixed to a red silk ground and identified in Latin on a typeset cedula label as B. Francisci a I.M.I // Palau y Quer (the Blessed Francisco of Jesus, Mary and Joseph Palau y Quer). On the back, under the protective cap, the theca is secured with a seal of red Spanish wax bearing an imprint of a coat of arms of the Order of the Discalced Brothers of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel (commonly known as the Discalced Carmelites). The relic is accompanied by the original matching authentics document issued on April 24, 1988 (the very day of her beatification) by the Postulator General of the Order.
