Oval glass-fronted silvered brass pendant reliquary theca housing the second-class Ex caputo (of the head covering) relic of Saint Benvenutus Scotivoli, Bishop of Osimo. The relic is affixed on a gilt paper burst on a background of silk, surrounded by a silver wire ornamentation and identified in Latin on a fancy manuscript cedula label as Ex Caputo S. Benvenuti Ep. Auxim. (of the head covering of Saint Benvenutus Scotivoli, Bishop of Osimo). On the back, the reliquary is secured by the perfectly preserved seal of red Spanish wax with a coat of arms of Fr. Francesco Maria Ginori (†1775), Bishop of Fiesole, Italy (1736–1775).
Saint Benvenutus Scotivoli (†1282), born in Ancona, Italy, was a Franciscan bishop renowned for his reforms and peacemaking. Educated in law at Bologna under Saint Sylvester Gozzolini, he was ordained a priest and became archdeacon of Ancona. Appointed Bishop of Osimo by Pope Urban IV in 1264, he restored order to a diocese troubled by political strife. He ordained Saint Nicholas of Tolentino and promoted charity, giving his possessions to the poor before his death on March 22, 1282. Canonized by Pope Martin IV in 1284, he is Osimo’s patron saint, celebrated on March 22.
