1990 Vatican documented reliquary with relic of St. Hilarius of Aquileia, Martyr

New Arrival
1990 Vatican documented reliquary with relic of St. Hilarius of Aquileia, Martyr

Round yellow-metal glass-fronted reliquary theca housing first-class ex ossibus (of the bone) relic of Saint Hilarius of Aquileia. The relic is affixed to a red silk ground and identified in Latin on a typeset cedula label as S. Hilarius Mart. (Saint Hilarius, Martyr). On the back, under a protective cap, the theca is secured with a seal of red Spanish wax bearing an imprint of a coat of arms of Monsignor Petrus Canisius van Lierde († 1995), the Vicar General for the Vatican City State (1951–1991). The reliquary is accompanied by the original matching authentics document issued by the Vicar General of Rome in 1990.

Saint Hilarius of Aquileia († c. 284) was an early Bishop of Aquileia, venerated as a saint and martyr. During the persecution of Numerian he was tortured to death under the prefect Beronius. Before his death Hilarius's prayers brought about the collapse of the pagan temples in Aquileia and the images of the gods they contained, to which he had refused to sacrifice. His martyrdom was shared by his deacon Tatianus, otherwise Tatian, with whom Hilarius's name is often linked, as in the dedication of Gorizia Cathedral, and also by their companions Felix, Largus and Dionysius. The feast day of Hilarius and companions is 16 March, the date of their martyrdom.
