Saint José Sánchez del Río (1913–1928) was a young Mexican martyr of the Cristero War, a conflict between the Catholic Church and the Mexican government. Born in Sahuayo, Michoacán, José was deeply devoted to his faith and joined the Cristero rebels at just 13 years old. Captured by government forces, he was pressured to renounce his beliefs but refused. Tortured and forced to walk barefoot to his grave, he was executed on February 10, 1928, crying out, "¡Viva Cristo Rey!" (Long live Christ the King!). The sainthood proceedings opened in Zamora on May 1, 1996 and he was beatified in Mexico by Pope Benedict XVI on November 20, 2005. He was canonized by Pope Francis on October 16, 2016 as a model of unwavering faith. His Feast Day is celebrated on February 10.
