Blessed Liberatus of Lauro (†1260) was a son of the wealthy Brunforte family who entered the Franciscan friary of Soffiano. Following his ordination as a Franciscan priest, he obtained permission from his superiors to live in solitude so as to devote himself totally to prayer and meditation. Liberatus became so deeply rapt in contemplation that he sometimes passed entire days without taking any food or sleep. His face when in ecstasy appeared radiant with light. On his deathbed, Liberatus spoke to his confreres of the joys of heaven. The place where his body rests was named San Liberato in his honor, and it has been the scene of many miracles. Pope Pius IX approved his veneration in 1868. His Feast Day is commemorated on September 6.
