Saint Stephen (†c.34), venerated as the protomartyr or first martyr of Christianity was, according to the Acts of the Apostles, a deacon in the early church at Jerusalem who aroused the enmity of members of various synagogues by his teachings. Accused of blasphemy at his trial, he made a speech denouncing the Jewish authorities who were sitting in judgment on him and was then stoned to death. His martyrdom was witnessed by Saul of Tarsus, a Pharisee who would later become a follower of Jesus and known as Paul the Apostle. The Catholic, Anglican, Oriental Orthodox, Eastern Orthodox Churches, and the Church of the East venerate Stephen as a saint. The relics of the protomartyr were later translated to Rome by Pope Pelagius II during the construction of the basilica of San Lorenzo Fuori le Mura. They were interred alongside the relics of Saint Lawrence, whose tomb is enshrined within the church. According to the Golden Legend, the relics of Lawrence moved miraculously to one side to make room for those of Stephen. Saint Stephen's feast day is celebrated by the Western Church on the 26th of December and on the 27th of December by the Eastern Church. He is considered to be a patron of altar servers; casket makers; deacons; headaches; horses; masons.
Saint Andrew Avellino († 1608) was an Italian Theatine priest who led a life busy in preaching, hearing confessions, visiting the sick, and writing. Born at Castronuovo, a small town in the province of Potenza Basilicata, his baptismal name was Lancelotto, which out of love for the Cross he changed into Andrew when he entered the Order of Theatines. He was so successful in converting sinners and heretics by his prudence in the direction of souls and by his eloquent preaching, that numerous disciples thronged around him, eager to be under his spiritual guidance. He is a patron of Naples, Sicily, and invoked against sudden death.
Saint Anthony of Padua († 1231), also known as Anthony of Lisbon, was a Portuguese Catholic priest and friar of the Franciscan Order. Noted by his contemporaries for his powerful preaching, expert knowledge of scripture, and undying love and devotion to the poor and the sick, he was one of the most-quickly canonized saints in church history. He was canonized in 1232 by Pope Gregory IX and was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1946. He is the patron saint of Lisbon, lost items, lost people, lost souls, American Indians; amputees; animals; Brazil; elderly people; faith in the Blessed Sacrament; fishermen; harvests; horses; lower animals; mail; mariners; oppressed people; poor people; Portugal; pregnant women; shipwrecks; starvation; sterility; swineherds; travel hostesses; and travelers. His feast day is celebrated on June 13.
