Reliquary theca with a relic of St. Cecilia of Rome, Martyr & Patron of Music

Oval glass-fronted brass pendant reliquary theca housing a precious first-class ex ossibus (of the bone) relic of Saint Cecilia.  The relic is affixed to a ground of red-colored silk and identified in Latin on a manuscript cedula label as S. Cecilia V.M. (Saint Cecilia, Virgin & Martyr). On the back, the theca is secured with a seal of red Spanish wax bearing an imprint of a coat of arms of Fr. Giuseppe Maria Martelli (†1741) Archbishop of Florence, Italy (1722-1740).

Saint Cecilia was a Roman martyr venerated in Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, and some Lutheran churches, such as the Church of Sweden. She became the patroness of music and musicians, it is written that, as the musicians played at her wedding, Cecilia "sang in her heart to the Lord". Musical compositions are dedicated to her, and her feast, on 22 November, is the occasion of concerts and musical festivals. St Cecilia is one of several virgin martyrs commemorated by name in the Canon of the Mass in the Latin Church.
