Reliquary theca with relic of St. Thomas Becket, Bishop of Canterbury & Martyr, Patron of Secular Clergy

Oval glass-fronted silver pendant reliquary theca housing the first-class ex ossibus (of the bone) relic of Saint Thomas of Canterbury.  A sizable relic is affixed to a gilt-paper starburst on a ground of salmon-colored silk, surrounded by silver wire ornamentation and identified in Latin on a fancy manuscript cedula label as Ex Oss. S. Thomae Canthuar[iensis] // Episc. & M.  (of the bone of  St. Thomas of Canterbury, Bishop & Martyr). On the back, the theca is secured with a seal of red Spanish wax bearing an imprint of a coat of arms of Fr. Francesco Maria Ginori (†1775), Bishop of Fiesole, Italy (1736–1775).

Saint Thomas of Canterbury, also known as Thomas Becket (†1170) served as Lord Chancellor from 1155 to 1162, and then as Archbishop of Canterbury from 1162 until his death in 1170. He engaged in conflict with Henry II, King of England, over the rights and privileges of the Church and was murdered by followers of the king in Canterbury Cathedral. Soon after his death, he was canonized by Pope Alexander III. The Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion venerate him as a saint and martyr. He is considered a patron Saint of the secular clergy, Exeter College in Oxford, Portsmouth Arbroath Abbey, and the City of London. His feast day is commemorated on 29 December.
