Reliquary theca with relics of St. Theopistos, Martyr & Son of St. Eustace, the Greatmartyr

Oval glass-fronted silver pendant reliquary theca housing the first-class ex ossibus (of the bone) relic of Saint Theopistos, Martyr.  A substantial relic is affixed to a gilt-paper starburst on a ground of salmon-colored silk, surrounded by silver wire ornamentation and identified in Latin on a fancy manuscript cedula label as Ex Oss. S. Theopisti Martyr  (of the bone of Saint Theopistos, Martyr). On the back, the theca is secured with a seal of red Spanish wax bearing an imprint of a coat of arms of Fr. Francesco Maria Ginori (†1775), Bishop of Fiesole, Italy (1736–1775).

Saint Theopistos (†118), venerated as a Christian martyr, was a son of St. Eustace, a pagan Roman general, who converted to Christianity after he had a vision of the cross while hunting. After Hadrian succeeded Trajan, the new emperor asked his general to sacrifice to the gods. When Eustathios refused, he threw him and his family to the lions, but the wild animals lay down at their feet. Hadrian when ordered them to be killed in a bronze Brazen Bull, which was heated until they died. The bodies of the martyrs were recovered in secrecy by Christians and buried in a "well-known place." St. Eustace and his family are known to protect against fire, family discord, and difficult situations and are holy patrons of firefighters, hunters, hunting, huntsmen, trappers, and torture victims. Their feast day is commemorated on 20 September.
