1742 Documented reliquary theca with relic of St. Clare of Assisi, founder the Order of Poor Ladies

Oval glass-fronted silvered metal pendant reliquary theca housing the first-class ex capillis (of the hair) relic of Saint Clare of Assisi. A relic is affixed to the silk ground surrounded by gilt paperolle and silver wire ornamentation and identified in Latin on a manuscript cedula label as Ex Capillis // S. Clarae V. Ass.(of the hair of Saint Clare of Assisi).  On the back, the theca is secured with a seal of red Spanish wax bearing an imprint of a coat of arms of Father Bernardino Ciani O.E.S.A. (†1767), Bishop of Montalcino (1727-1767). The relic is accompanied by the original matching authentics document issued and sealed by the order of Bishop Ciani in 1742.

Saint Clare of Assisi († 1253) is an Italian saint and one of the first followers of Saint Francis of Assisi. She founded the Order of Poor Ladies, a monastic religious order for women in the Franciscan tradition, and wrote their Rule of Life, the first set of monastic guidelines known to have been written by a woman. She is a patron of Eye disease, goldsmiths, laundry, television, embroiderers, gilders, good weather, needleworkers, Santa Clara Pueblo, Obando.
