Reliquary theca containing relics of Saint John of Capistrano

Round silver glass-fronted reliquary theca dating to 1920's housing relics of Saint John of Capistrano. The relics are affixed to a red silk background and identified on a typographic cedula as S. Joan. Cap. C. (Saint John of Capistrano, Confessor)On the back, under a protective cap, the theca is protected by a seal of red wax with a hardly visible imprint of a coat of arms of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin sealed by Fr. Anthony M. Santarelli, Postulator General of the Order in 1920's responsible for a cause for beatification and canonization through the judicial processes required by the Roman Catholic Church.

Saint John of Capistrano (†1456) was a Franciscan friar and Catholic priest from the Italian town of Capestrano, Abruzzo. Famous as a preacher, theologian, and inquisitor, he earned himself the nickname 'the Soldier Saint' when in 1456 at age 70 he led a crusade against the invading Ottoman Empire at the siege of Belgrade with the Hungarian military commander John Hunyadi. Elevated to sainthood, he is the patron saint of jurists and military chaplains, as well as the namesake of the Franciscan missions San Juan Capistrano in Southern California and San Juan Capistrano in San Antonio, Texas. His feast day is celebrated on March 28.
