Documented theca with relic of the Veil of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Authenticated reliquary of impeccable provenance and documented origin housing Ex Velo (of the veil) relic of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The oval glass-fronted silver reliquary theca is decorated with silver wire. The relic is affixed to red silk backing, surrounded by gilt paperolles ornamentation and titled on a paper cedula label in Latin as Ex Velo B. V. M. (of the Veil of the Blessed Virgin Mary). The theca is secured on the back with a perfectly preserved seal of red wax with imprinted coat of arms of Fr. Nicolai Angelo Maria Landini, Titular Archbishop of Porphyrion and is accompanied by the original matching certification document dated 1774, issued by the direct order of Pope Benedict XIV and hand-signed by Fr. Landini in a capacity of Assistant at the Pontifical Throne and Sacristan (Custodian) of the Apostolic Shrine (1764-1782). In the document, the relic is described as originating from the Church of Saint Anastasia de Urbe in Rome and has additional certification "without being opened" by the Archbishop of Genoa.

Father Nicolai Angelo Maria Landini (OSA Order of St. Augustine) († 1782), Titular Bishop of Porphyrion (1764-1782) and Catholic Apostolic Prefect and was a significant member of the Vatican Curia at the time of a pontificate of Pope Clement XIV (p. 1769-1774) with an honorary title of Assistant to the Pontifical Throne. Part of his direct duties as the Sacristan of the Apostolic Shrine included certification of the Holy relics intended for direct papal gifts.

According to tradition, the Veil of the Blessed Virgin Mary was worn by the Virgin as she stood at the foot of the Cross. It had been transferred in the early years of the Christianity from Jerusalem to Constantinople when it was presented by the Byzantine Empress Irene to the Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne. In 876 his descendant Charles the Bald gave the relic to the cathedral at Chartres. The Veil is kept in a golden reliquary beside the high altar and has formed the focus of many traditions throughout the centuries. It was believed to have protected the faithful down through the centuries from many dangers and evils, including famine and war, outbreaks of the plague, and the worst ravishes of the French Revolution. The veil itself is more than six meters long and made of silk. Scientific studies have shown that it is of Syrian design, of fine quality and can be traced to the first century. Every year on 15th August, the Feast of the Assumption of Our Lady, the Veil is processed through the town of Chartres.
