The name of the icon Consolation of the Afflicted Mother of God is based on the belief of Christians that the Theotokos helps to rid of troubles and misfortunes one who prayerfully turns to Her for help. SIn the canon of prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos there are the words: "Lady Mother of God, hasten thou, and save us" (Canto 3). Sometimes the image is called "Deliverance from the troubles of the suffering."
