Reliquary theca with relics of St. Ignatius of Loyola & St. Stanislaw Kostka

Round glass-fronted gilt brass reliquary theca housing relics of 2 Catholic Saints: the second-class ex veste (of the vestment) relic of Saint Ignatius of Loyola and the second-class ex velo (of the clothes) relic of Saint Stanislaw Kostka. The relics are affixed to a red silk background decorated with silver wire ornamentation and identified on manuscript cedulae labels. On the back, the theca is secured with a perfectly-preserved seal of red Spanish wax bearing an imprint of a coat of arms of an unidentified Italian Roman Catholic Bishop.

Saint Ignatius of Loyola (†1556) was a Spanish Basque priest and theologian who founded the religious order called the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) and became its first Superior General. Ignatius was beatified in 1609, and then canonized, receiving the title of Saint on March 12, 1622. His feast day is celebrated on July 31. He is the patron saint of the Basque provinces of Gipuzkoa and Biscay as well as the Society of Jesus and was declared patron saint of all spiritual retreats by Pope Pius XI in 1922. Ignatius is also a foremost patron saint of soldiers.

Saint Stanislaw Kostka S.J. (†1568) was a Polish novice of the Society of Jesus. The Holy See ratified his beatification in 1605; he was canonized in 1726. St. Stanislaus is a popular saint of Poland and many religious institutions have chosen him as the protector of their novitiates. He is invoked for palpitations of the heart and for dangerous cases of illness. Patron of Jesuit novices, students, Poland, Broken Bones.
