Fancy silver reliquary monstrance with relics of the True Cross of Jesus Christ
A fancy silver Baroque reliquary monstrance on a silvered wood stand profusely decorated with intricate floral ornamentation with an affixed silver plaque showing an engraved nobility coat of arms. A central crystal-fronted round cavity is housing sizable relics from the Wood from the True Cross of Jesus Christ. The relics are displayed in a cruciform shape on the ground of gold silk surrounded by silver wire and gilt paperolle ornamentation and are identified on a manuscript cedula label as Vera Crucis (The True Cross [ of Our Lord Jesus Christ ]). On its back, the theca is secured by a perfectly preserved seal of red Spanish wax with an imprint of a coat of arms of Monsignor Muzio Cardinal Gallo (†1801), Cardinal-Priest of Sant’Anastasia al Palatino in Rome and Bishop of Viterbo e Tuscania (1785-1801). The reliquary comes with its original papier-mâché fitted case.
