Small Russian Finift Porcelain icon - St. Grand Prince Dimitri & Miraculous icon of St. Nicholas

Back

An oval hand-painted double-sided finift porcelain icon pendant depicting a rare image of the Miraclulous vision of the icon of St. Nicholas to St. Prince Dimitri. Some cracks and losses on the back panel, otherwise very good original condition.

According to legend, in 1380, on the way to the Kulikovo battle, Prince Dimitri stopped for a halt (for reassurance) fifteen miles from Moscow. Here he saw over a pine tree an icon of St. Nicholas. After the prayer of the prince, boyars and soldiers, the icon itself descended into the hands of Demetrius. The prince exclaimed: "All this has sinned his heart" .
