Russian silver Orthodox pectoral cross with Crucifixion and Scenes of Christ's Passion

Back

A Russian Orthodox pectoral pendant cross of solid parcel gilt silver intricately decorated on both sides in niello with the scene of Crucifixion surrounded by other scenes of the Christ's Passion. On its sides, the cross is inscribed in the abbreviated Old Slavonic: «Азъ [бо язвы] Г[оспо]да Ии[су]са [на теле моем] ношу» ("I bear on my body the marks of the Lord Jesus." (Galatians 6:17)). Rare in such high quality of execution and richness of decoration that makes this item intensely personal for an Orthodox believer.

Galatians 6:17 is a Bible verse where Apostle Paul declares, "From now on, let no one trouble me, for I bear on my body the marks of the Lord Jesus," signifying that his suffering for Christ (scars from beatings, stonings, etc.) proved his authenticity and ownership by Jesus, unlike the "marks" of circumcision false teachers promoted. These physical scars, akin to branding marks showing ownership, were Paul's badges of honor, testifying to his faithful service and identifying him as belonging to Christ. In essence, Paul uses his physical suffering and scars as undeniable proof of his deep commitment and ownership by Jesus, challenging others to recognize his true apostleship.
