Russian Folding Travel Skladen Icon of Orthodox Deisis with Saints

Back

Three-panel cast-brass folding travel icon depicting Christ Almighty flanked by the Virgin Mary and St. John the Baptist to form the Orthodox Deisis in the central panel and six selected Saints in side panels. The left panel depicts Saint Philipp, Mitropolit of Moscow; Saint Nicholas, Wonderworker of Myra; and Saint John the Crysostom. The right panel depicts the Guardian Angel, Saints Zosima and Sabbatius, Founders of the Solovetsky monastery. The backside depicts the Golgotha cross with the instruments of the Passion.

In Orthodoxy, the Deisis (from the Greek for "prayer" or "supplication") is a traditional iconic representation of Christ in Majesty flanked by the Virgin Mary and St. John the Baptist, and sometimes other saints and angels. Mary and John, and any other figures, are shown facing Christ with their hands raised in supplication on behalf of humanity. The presence of Mary and John, and other figures, is one of the differences with the Western Christ in Majesty, where the Four Evangelists and/or their symbols are more commonly included around Christ.
