Important reliquary with relic of Saint Benedicta (Benedetta) of Rome, Virgin Martyr
Large oval glass fronted parcel guilt wood reliquary housing historically important bone relic of Saint Benedicta, Virgin and Martyr. The relic, over 150 mm in length, is affixed to the background of red silk and titled on an intricately cut cedula as S. Benedictae Mar[tirus]. The protection seals on the back are missing and there is no indication that the reliquary was originally sealed.
Saint Benedicta of Rome, a 6th-century virgin and martyr, was a devoted nun in a convent founded by Saint Galla. Known for her profound faith and mystical experiences, she received a vision from Saint Peter foretelling her death. According to Pope Saint Gregory the Great, Benedicta earnestly prayed to join her beloved friend, Saint Galla, in eternal rest, passing away thirty days after Galla’s death. Her life exemplified purity and dedication to Christ. Venerated in the pre-1970 Roman Martyrology, her feast was celebrated in Laon, France, honoring her martyrdom and spiritual legacy.
