1991 Documented reliquary theca with relic of St. Peter Canisius S.J., Doctor of the Church
Round glass-fronted white-metal reliquary theca housing the first-class ex ossibus (of the bone) relic of Saint Peter Canisius. The relic is affixed to a red silk ground and identified in Latin on a typeset cedula label as S. Petri Canisii (Saint Peter Canisius). On the back, under the protective cap, the theca is secured with a seal of red Spanish wax bearing an imprint of a coat of arms of the Jesuit Order. The relic is accompanied by the original matching authentics document issued and signed in 1991 by the Postulator General of the Order responsible for the cause of beatification and canonization.
Saint Peter Canisius S.J. (†1597) was a renowned Dutch Jesuit Catholic priest who became known for his strong support for the Catholic faith during the Protestant Reformation in Europe. The restoration of the Catholic Church in Germany after the Protestant Reformation is largely attributed to the work thereof the Society of Jesus, which he led. He is venerated in the Catholic Church as a saint and as a Doctor of the Church. Canisius was canonized and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1925 by Pope Pius XI. His feast is celebrated on 21 December, the anniversary of his death (although it is kept by the Society of Jesus on 27 April).
