1990 Documented reliquary theca with relic of St. Eustochia Calafato, Abbess

Back

Round glass-fronted white-metal reliquary theca housing the second-class ex indumentis  (of the clothes) relic of Saint Eustochia Calafato. The relic is affixed to a red silk ground and identified in Latin on a manuscript cedula label as S. Eustochia (Saint Eustochia).  On the back, under the protective cap, the theca is secured with a seal of red Spanish wax bearing an imprint of a coat of arms of the Order of the Friars Minor. The relic is accompanied by the original matching authentics document issued and signed in 1990 by the Postulator General of the Friars Minors responsible for the cause of beatification and canonization.

Saint Eustochia Calafato (†1485) is a Franciscan Italian saint from the Order of the Poor Clares. In 1464 she founded a convent which became known as Montevergine ("Mountain of the Virgin"). The building project was apparently completed through the funding of a wealthy relative. Eustochia was chosen abbess, and at the time of her death, the convent was home to 50 sisters. She died on 20 January 1485, at the age of 50. She was canonized on 11 June 1988 in Messina by Pope John Paul II. She is co-patroness of Messina and her Feast Day is commemorated on 20 January.
