1984 Documented reliquary theca with relic of St. Michael Febres Cordero (Brother Miguel), 1st Male Saint of Ecuador

Back

Round glass-fronted yellow-metal reliquary theca housing the first-class ex ossibus (of the bone) relic of Saint Michael Febres Cordero. The relic is affixed to a red silk ground and identified in Latin on a typeset cedula label as Ex Ossibus / S. Michaëlis / Febres Corder (of the bone of Saint Michael Febres-Cordero). On the back, under the protective cap, the theca is secured with a seal of red Spanish wax bearing an imprint of a coat of arms of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools (commonly known as De La Salle Brothers). The relic is accompanied by the original matching authentics document issued and signed in 1984 by the Postulator General of the Order responsible for the cause of beatification and canonization.

Saint Michael Febres Cordero (also known as Saint Miguel Febres Cordero or Brother Miguel) (†1910), born in Cuenca, Ecuador, overcame a childhood deformity miraculously healed at age five through a vision of the Virgin Mary. He joined the De La Salle Brothers (the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools) at 14 in 1868, becoming the first native Ecuadorian in the order. A gifted educator and linguist, he authored influential Spanish grammar textbooks as a teen, prepared children for First Communion, and contributed to catechesis and scholarship. Transferred to Spain, he died of pneumonia at age 55. Beatified in 1977 and canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1984 as Ecuador's first male saint, his feast is February 9.
